Poverty on Increase in the UK Due to Numbers of Repossessions

Mon, 07 Dec 2009

Poverty is increasing, so says a Joseph Rowntree report as the government pledges to erase child poverty by 2020.

In the UK poverty has been increasing since 2004 and is presently at the same level as the beginning of the decade, according to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation report.

The group stated that issues such as unemployment and repossessions had become more evident prior to the recession starting.

Long-term solutions are needed to reverse the poverty trend.

However, the report also highlighted improvements of the last decade, like a decreasing fear of crime.

Moreover, the rate of premature deaths is decreasing and infant mortality has decreased over the last decade.

The report emphasises that in the UK 2004-05 was a crucial turning point due to it being the time unemployment, poverty and property repossessions started to rise.

There are presently two million children living in low-income, working households, the highest on record.

The tax credits system is tackling the symptoms, not the root cause, of the issue as many people are not getting enough income in spite of working many hours each week.

Solutions are "not obvious", however, poverty needs debating and tackling.

Many people have been "taxed into poverty" .
