Northern Ireland repossessions rise

The number of people at risk of having their home repossessed in Northern Ireland is on the rise, new figures show.

According to the Belfast Telegraph, recent data from the Housing Rights Service makes grim reading and reveals how many families are close to being made homeless.

The statistics revealed that 1,872 writs were issued by the courts to homeowners in 2012 - a dramatic year-on-year rise.

With 2009 figures and those of previous years falling in the 500 to 600 bracket, the total marks a three-fold rise on the average.

The newspaper also reported that homelessness in South Belfast has risen in the past year, but the level is still the second lowest of all areas of the city.

It cited new Northern Ireland Department of Social Development figures, which showed that the 945 households declaring themselves homeless was up on the previous year's 886.

Meanwhile, north and west Belfast have slightly bigger problems, with figures reaching 1,117 and 1,086 respectively.

In other news, the Association of Arrears Mediators recently claimed that the number of at-risk borrowers is expected to increase in the third and fourth quarters of the year.
