Dumfries homeowners have properties repossessed

Fri, 22 Jul 2011

A number of Dumfriesshire families have seen their homes repossessed after falling into debt and defaulting on their mortgages, it has been reported.

According to the Dumfries and Galloway Standard, 13 properties were taken away from their owners after cases at Dumfries Sheriff Court.

The decrees for repossession were granted as the debtors failed to attend court to defend their actions, money advice specialist Christine Sinclair told the newspaper.

A further five cases are due to be heard today (July 22nd) and the Citizens Advice Bureau representative has urged those involved to make an appearance.

"This is going to be an ongoing situation as more and more people are called to court," she said.

"I would encourage people to either attend court or seek assistance. There are options for people if they act quickly. It is never too late to seek help."

With high energy bills and rising fuel and food prices, pressure is growing on homeowners' finances and many are struggling to pay their mortgages each month as a result.

Scottish and Southern Energy is the latest power firm to announce a rise in its electric and gas bills.

Ms Sinclair added that there have been 186 calling-up orders in the area in the past six months, meaning a high number of people are at risk of repossession.
