A public meeting was held in Dublin last Sunday to discuss the area of mortgage arrears .
At present there are almost 50,000 mortgage holders in arrears with a further 30,000 who have restructured their mortgages .
The United Left Alliance TDs are urging the Irish government to cease the practice of repossessions and evictions.
The meeting is also being supported by the legal group New Beginning, an organisation that has provided free representation in courts for householders who have been threatened with eviction .
At a meeting in Dublin this morning New Beginning urged the Government to prevent sub-prime lenders from operating in the State.
The Group is not demanding mortgage debt forgiveness. However, it is urging that mortgage holders who are in financial difficulties ought to be permitted to extend the period of their mortgage without being financially penalised.
It is imperative when faced with mortgage arrears or repossession that you liaise with your mortgage lender, seek debt advice from a debt advice agency; it is crucial you do something about your situation.
