Repossession statistics show Welsh areas at risk

Tue, 22 Nov 2011

New statistics have revealed parts of Wales that are most at risk of witnessing repossessions.

Blaenau Gwent was named the top county in the danger zone, while Merthyr Tydfil, Rhondda Cynon Taff, Caerphilly and Neath Port Talbot were all close behind, the Free Press Series reports.

Data has been released by the Welsh government and the Ministry of Justice to compile the report using figures from 2010-11.

It calculated the rate of claims leading to possession orders per 1,000 private households for each local authority in the country, the news source notes.

All 22 local authorities were ranked and Monmouthshire came close to the end in 18th place.

When statistics for England and Wales were combined, Blaenau Gwent ranked fourth highest in the two countries overall.

This follows repossession figures published by the Council of Mortgage Lenders that revealed UK mortgage assets were continuing to perfirm well.

The number of properties taken into possession by lenders in quarter three of 2011 came to 9,200 - almost unchanged from the 9,100 recorded during the previous three-month timeframe of the same year.
