Welsh town highlighted as repossession hotspot

A town in Wales has been highlighted as a hotspot for home repossession thanks to newly-collected data.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Justice and the Welsh government, those residing in Blaenau Gwent are at the most risk in the country of being removed from their dwellings.

It was shown that during 2010 and 2011, the authority had 145 possession orders, equating to 5.9 such instructions per 1,000 private households.

Other areas in the nation deemed at risk include Caerphilly, Newport and Torfaen.

Shelter Cymru - which has been active in Wales for 30 years - analysed the data and found a strong link between unemployment and possible repossessions.

Director of the group John Puzey noted many people in Wales are currently struggling with rising living costs coupled with high inflation and frozen wages.

Mr Puzey observed: "All it takes is one misfortune such as illness or redundancy for people to find themselves in serious financial difficulties and at risk of losing their home."

He added those struggling to pay off their mortgage should seek independent advice as soon as possible.
