Females could fear repossessions as more jobs set to be axed

British females might be more worried about the spectre of home repossession than their male counterparts after a recent TUC report said women's unemployment is at a 23-year high and is set to continue rising around the UK.

The figures, which were released yesterday (September 5th), show that public sector redundancies could hit women particularly hard as the proportion of female employees in government-funded roles has risen at three times the rate of males in the past decade.

The proportion is even higher in areas such as the East Midlands, West Midlands, North East and South East.

TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said: "Female unemployment is already at a 23-year high, and with so many women employed in the public sector, this will only deteriorate as job cuts in our health, education, local government and the civil service continue to mount.

He added that while the rising number of women in work has been great news over the past ten years, the increased exposure to job cuts could mean females are particularly at risk.

Meanwhile, the TUC recently claimed that cuts in support for lone parents are likely to cause workless household figures to rise again.
